Azerbaijan introduces system of family doctors and training of paramedics
With World Bank’s assistance the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan has introduced family doctor system in the country not waiting for legislative support of family medicine.
The Bank says that by the health minister’s order the district doctors were transferred to the status of family physicians, and the process of their retraining began.
"Appropriate training courses are under completion in Shaki and Ismailli regions of the country. Only doctors will be subjected to retraining. The process of re-training and re-profiling will also cover paramedical personnel,” the WB indicated. Read more >

Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan agree on zero quota of sturgeon caviar export in 2010
The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has published today the export quotas for caviar and other sturgeon products agreed by the Caspian States for 2010.
The Secretariat informs that the 2010 quotas were agreed by Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan during a meeting held in Tehran. Read more >

EBRD, EIB & WB express interest to upgrade storage and transit of gas to Ukraine
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), European Investment Bank (EIB) and World Bank announced receipt of expressions of interest for consultations in preparation for upgrading storage and transit of gas to Ukraine.
According to the EBRD, the interest will be accepted until 5 pm at London time on 20 August. The consultant is selected within EBRD, EIB & WBG project worth 2bn Euro on behalf of NAK Naftogaz of Ukraine. Read more >

Activists win Asian ‘Nobel Prize’
The mayor of Hiroshima, in Japan, and a Chinese photographer who has documented pollution in the face of official harassment are among the winners of this year's Ramon Magsaysay prize.
The award, named after an ex-president of the Philippines, is widely seen as Asia's version of the Nobel Prize. Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, a survivor of the WWII nuclear bomb, has led a global campaign for nuclear disarmament. Read more >

UN to launch Pakistan flood appeal
The UN is to launch an appeal to help Pakistan tackle the country's worst flooding in 80 years.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued an urgent plea for donors to "generously support Pakistan at this difficult time". A UN official said the disaster had now affected nearly 14 million people, eclipsing the scale of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Read more >

Transocean profit hit by BP spill
Offshore drilling firm Transocean has seen quarterly profits drop due to legal costs and reduced income after the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
It lost its rig in the April blowout, which also resulted in a reduction in drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, where Transocean had 14 other deepwater rigs. Read more >

Toyota profits rise after sales recover
Japanese carmaker Toyota has reported its biggest quarterly profit in two years, with sales recovering as the company seeks to put the recall of millions of vehicles behind it.
Toyota made a net profit of 190.4bn yen ($2.2bn; GBP 1.4bn) in the three months to June, bouncing back from a 77.8bn yen loss in the same period a year ago. Read more >

Google cleared of Wi-Fi snooping
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)
Google did not grab "significant" personal details when collecting data from Wi-Fi networks, according to the UK's Information Commissioner Office (ICO).
The finding came after the body reviewed some of the data Google scooped up from unsecured networks. Google said the data was "mistakenly" gathered while logging Wi-Fi hotspots to help with location-based services. Read more >

GB's Turner and Sharman reach European hurdles semis
European Athletics Championships 2010, Venue: Barcelona Dates: 27 July - 1 August
Great Britain's Andy Turner and Will Sharman both qualified for the semi-finals of the men's 110m hurdles at the European Athletics Championships.
Turner, ranked third in Europe in 2010, won his heat in 13.48 seconds after European champion Stanislav Olijar had been disqualified for a false start. Sharman, who beat Turner in the trials, finished third in his heat in 13.60. Read more >

Shin secures Evian Masters title to regain world number one status
South Korea's Jiyai Shin made birdie on the final hole to secure the Evian Masters title and regain her crown as the world's number one female golfer.
Shin's putt completed a sparkling five-under-par round of 67 and meant overnight leader Morgan Pressel had to sink her own birdie putt on the last to force a playoff, but her effort narrowly missed. Read more >
